MAN DIES FOLLOWING STRUGGLE WITH MONROE COUNTY DEPUTY DURING ARREST ATTEMPT
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is probing the death of a Monroe County man who became unresponsive and later died following a physical altercation with a deputy attempting to serve an arrest warrant last week.
According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy went to a residence on Maple Springs Road on Friday, October 30, 2026, to serve an active arrest warrant on John Bishop. When contacted in the driveway, Bishop’s behavior escalated and he fled.
The deputy deployed a taser, but Bishop continued to resist, failed to comply with verbal commands, and attempted to remove the taser probes. A physical altercation ensued as Bishop continued his attempts to flee, resulting in the deputy using physical force.
During the struggle, Bishop became unresponsive. The deputy immediately began performing CPR, and responding backup deputies assisted with life-saving measures until EMS arrived and transported him from the scene.
Command staff notified District Attorney General Stephen Hatchett and requested an independent investigation by the TBI. On Tuesday, November 3, the Sheriff’s Office was informed that Bishop had been pronounced deceased.
The TBI’s active investigation is underway, and all further inquiries have been directed to their office. The Sheriff’s Office has expressed condolences to Bishop’s family and offered support to the deputy and all those affected by the tragedy.
