MAN FLEES HOSPITAL ON FOOT AND BURGLARIZES CHURCH

On New Year’s Eve at around 5:00 p.m., Crossville police units were dispatched to Cumberland Medical Center in regards to a man pulling a fire alarm and running from the building. This event prompted the Crossville Fire Department to respond to the scene.

Officers found that medical staff had signed paperwork on the man who was identified as Amaud Gerlus. Officers would make contact with Gerlus standing in the road at Creekway Drive, no longer wearing the scrubs that he had when he left the hospital.

When asked what happened to his scrubs, the man said he broke into a church on Dayton Avenue and stole his current clothes. He had lacerations on his arms for unknown reasons, and he asked officers if they would take him to jail if he fought them.

The man was taken to Cumberland Medical Center where he received treatment.

Meanwhile, Officer Amy Sherill responded to Emmanuel Baptist Church to investigate a possible break-in and her investigation led to a broken window. After calling the church’s key holder, they found blood-soaked towels in various places throughout the church. The officers also found that the clothes found on Gerlus were stolen from the church.

Gerlus is currently receiving treatment at Cumberland Medical Center but was charged with burglary and filing a false report.
