MARLENE S. NOVAK, AGE 85
Marlene S. Novak, age 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 19, 2026, surrounded by her family. Marlene was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Bledsoe County, Tennessee, with her young family in the 1970’s.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Mary and Stephen; and brother: Steve Podmajersky.
Marlene is survived by her husband of 63 years: Steve; daughters: Lisa, Audra, and Sabrina; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Olivia, and Caroline; and special extended family in the Fraziers.
Owning and operating Valley Market in Cold Springs with her husband, she treated everyone with respect and caring, and loved visiting with her regulars. She was never too busy to offer a listening ear to those who wanted the company. Kids never left the store without a little treat of some sort. She was well-known for her kindness to people, her delicious sandwiches made to order, and her love of all living things.
Marlene had a green thumb; she could put a stick in the ground, and it would grow something beautiful! She couldn’t stand to let a broken leaf of African Violet die, so she would root them and had pots and pots of them throughout the house, blooming year-round. Countless unwanted dogs and cats were left on her doorstep because she was known for her compassion for animals. She loved them unconditionally and treated them as we should treat all living beings, with respect and utmost care. Many times, we joked about how we would gladly trade places with her sweet animals. They didn’t have the best starts in life, but they sure had the best when they made their way to her. We rejoice in the knowledge that she is whole again and welcomed by so many loving souls that went before. Finally, to all the people who would see her in town after they closed the store: she would talk about how lovely it was to see you and the hugs and fellowship you shared. Thank you for sharing your lives with her, she loved every minute of it!
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. central on Saturday, April 11, 2026 in the Pikeville Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until service time Saturday. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Sequatchie Valley Low Cost Spay and neuter.
Pikeville Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.
