MARYVILLE POLICE OFFICER SUSPENDED FOR 3 DAYS AFTER ON-DUTY CRASH

The Blount County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash involving on-duty Maryville police officer Austin Green. (Protocol dictates outside agencies conduct officer-involved collision investigations.)

Green was approaching the intersection of Irwin Avenue and North Everett High Road March 16 when he came to a rolling stop, hitting a car approaching the intersection.

Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said there was no video footage of the collision; he said Green was running a plate number on a possible stolen vehicle at the time of the crash. According to the accident report, the other driver tried to avoid the collision, but was unsuccessful.

Green was taken to the hospital because he hit his head on the window and hurt his wrist. The other driver went to the hospital with shoulder and arm pain. Crisp said he’s grateful no one was seriously injured in the crash.

Each officer with the Maryville Police Department undergoes eight driving hours during annual in-service training; they go over safety, driving in adverse conditions, defensive driving and safe operation of a patrol unit. Moreover, driving is part of the basic police-academy training.

Green, who’s been with the Maryville Police Department for four years, was issued a three-day suspension without pay. This was his first collision.
