MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE DEBUNKS SWEETWATER WORKHOUSE RUMOR

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has addressed and debunked social media rumors claiming an inmate had escaped from custody in Sweetwater. No escape or attempted escape occurred. On March 10, around 9:30 p.m., a workhouse inmate—new to the program and unfamiliar with the area—left his assigned job site at GlassMasters during a scheduled lunch break to buy food and a drink at a nearby store. While attempting to return in the dark, he became disoriented and lost.
Throughout the incident, the inmate stayed compliant, kept his ankle monitor intact and untampered with, and did not flee. After GlassMasters staff followed protocol and reported him missing for not returning on time (noted around dinner break), deputies searched the area; the inmate actually approached them himself while trying to find his way back. He was promptly returned to the Monroe County Jail without any issues. Jail officials are now reviewing his participation in the workhouse program to assess his continued eligibility.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized its commitment to sharing only verified facts after thorough investigation, urged the public to rely on official sources for accurate information, and noted that a genuine escape would prompt immediate public alerts with identifying details and photos to ensure community safety.
