MONROE SHERIFF WARNS OF INCREASE IN SCAMMER CALLS

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public to stay alert and protect themselves from ongoing scams in our community. Recently, there has been an increase in scammer calls targeting citizens in Monroe County.
Scammers often pose as government agencies, law enforcement, or businesses to pressure individuals into providing personal information or making payments.
Remember NO legitimate agency will demand payment over the phone or request gift cards as a form of payment.
If you receive a suspicious call, text, or email, DO NOT engage-HANG UP and/or delete the text message or email.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS:
DON’T answer calls from unknown numbers.
If you answered and it’s not who you expected, HANG UP.
If a caller asks you to hit a button to stop getting calls, HANG UP.
Never assume an unexpected call is legitimate. HANG UP and call back using a number
you can verify on a bill, statement, or on an official website
DON’T give out personal information-account numbers, Social Security numbers or passwords. Do not answer any security questions.
Use extreme caution if you are being pressured for immediate payment – if that’s the case HANG UP.
If someone tells you a family member is in immediate danger and they need money to help them – HANG UP and then call your family member to make sure they’re okay.
