MORGAN COUNTY GRAND JURY DECLINES TO CHARGE ANYONE IN CASE OF BOY ACCIDENTALLY SHOT

A Morgan County Grand Jury did not charge anyone in the case of an 8-year-old child who accidentally shot himself earlier this month.

The incident happened just before 7:30 p.m. on September 8, 2023, in the Mossy Grove community on Ray Cross Road.

The mother was at home with the child and a sibling at the time of the incident. The mother said she was in the living room and heard a pop sound from the kitchen. Officers say the child shot himself with a 9mm handgun.

Authorities believe the father placed or kept a loaded 9mm handgun in a holster on top of the refrigerator in the kitchen. The mother said the child used a chair to climb up on the countertops in the kitchen. The boy reached on top of the refrigerator to get the gun and somehow shot himself once in the upper chest area.

The father was at work at the time of the shooting.

The boy continues to recover.

Morgan County Sheriff Wayne Potter says the Department of Children’s Services (DCS) had been to the house several times regarding the child.
