MOTHER OF BABIES LEFT UNATTENDED IN BATHTUB APPEARS IN COURT
When 34-year-old Bethanie A. Carriker made her first appearance before Judge Robert L. Headrick in Blount County General Sessions Court this afternoon, her attorneys asked that her court date be rescheduled for May 29 at the Blount County Justice Center. Carriker stands accused of aggravated child neglect in the drowning death of her 15-month-old daughter and the attempted drowning of her now-three-week-old infant, who was 19 days old at the time of the crime. Carriker is being held in the Blount County Jail on $1 million bond.
The toddler was pronounced dead at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital Tuesday evening.
Court documents assert the babies were left alone in a bathtub for 10 to 12 minutes, and the mother was said to have found them “blue and unresponsive” before calling 911 for help.
Personnel from the Seymour Fire Department and Blount County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Greenfern Trail home shortly after 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, having received a call about a drowning. The Seymour Volunteer Fire Department chief said Carriker was attempting CPR when they arrived.
