MYSTERIOUS “BRUSHING SCAM” PACKAGES REVEAL PERSONAL DATA BREACHES NATIONWIDE

A “brushing scam” is currently affecting consumers nationwide, according to a report by NewsChannel 5, involving the delivery of unsolicited packages—often empty envelopes or inexpensive trinkets like hair clips and dog toys—from non-existent senders. According to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), these items are sent by third-party international sellers to exploit e-commerce algorithms. By sending a package to your address, the seller can register you as a “verified buyer,” allowing them to post fraudulent, high-rated reviews under your name to artificially boost their product’s visibility and sales on platforms like Amazon or eBay.

While federal law allows recipients to keep any unsolicited merchandise they receive, the arrival of these packages serves as a significant red flag that your personal data has been compromised. Security experts warn that because these scammers have your name and address, they may have access to other sensitive information as well. If targeted, you should immediately change your online passwords, monitor your credit reports, and set up banking alerts for unusual activity. Furthermore, accepting these packages often signals to scammers that your address is “active,” which may lead to a continued influx of unwanted mail. To mitigate the impact, the BBB recommends contacting retailers to remove any fake reviews associated with your account and remaining vigilant over your digital security.
