NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE: “AT LEAST EF-3” TORNADO HIT PUTNAM COUNTY

The National Weather Service said today “at least an EF-3 tornado” hit Putnam County yesterday, but surveyors were still assessing data to determine whether the force of the storm was stronger. Crews were talking to structural engineers to determine whether the tornado should be classified as an EF-4. A final determination of the rating of the tornado will be made soon.

An EF-3 tornado is classified as having winds from 136 to 165 miles per hour.

An EF-4 tornado is classified as having winds from 166 to 200 miles per hour resulting in devastating damage. Well-constructed and whole frame houses completely leveled; some frame homes may be swept away; and cars and other large objects thrown.

Officials said the tornado touched down in Putnam County between the city limits of Cookeville and Baxter. At least 18 people were killed and at least 88 injured. Officials said some of those injuries were critical, and some people were transported to hospitals in Nashville and Chattanooga.
