NEW TITANS STADIUM COULD SEE RISING TAXES FOR PEOPLE WHO VISIT NASHVILLE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — The City of Nashville could see rising taxes in the future. Not for those who live here, but for those who visit. And it’s all to help pay for the Titan’s new stadium.

Lawmakers estimate this would raise at least $10 to $20 million annually to go toward a new stadium, under the condition that it’s a dome stadium and seats 50,000 people. Under the proposal, local motels and hotels would see a 1% tax increase for the next 30 years, unless it’s paid off sooner.  But some lawmakers worry about how the tax increase could impact tourism, calling it fiscally irresponsible.

Lawmaker Brandon Ogles says, “I think low taxes are very much of an incentive for businesses and people to come to an area and I fear that the path we’re on in Metro Nashville is not sustainable.”

But others are optimistic saying this could open up the opportunity for more sporting events like the Superbowl and SCC championships. In turn, bringing in more revenue. Lawmaker Patsy Hazlewood says, “The return on investment comes in economic impact with visitors with the money they spend in our restaurants and our hotels and bars.”

FOX 17 News asked our viewers on Facebook for their thoughts, sparking a debate from hundreds of people. Most disagreed with the proposal. Some are calling on the National Football League (NFL) to pay for it rather than the visitors, who would rarely get to enjoy the amenities. Others are thankful it wouldn’t affect them.

Freddie O’Connell says, “This won’t have particularly strong impacts on Nashvillians. Also something we want to be mindful of. Who’s getting the benefit vs. who is getting the investment.”

But O’ Connel says his concern lies with those who seek shelter in hotels.  Freddie says, “I certainly don’t want to further cost burden somebody who is already at extreme risk in terms of lack of housing.“
