OAK RIDGE LAUNCHES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR PAVING PROJECT
The City of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is moving forward with a multi-million-dollar paving project after city leaders approved more than $3.2 million for road repairs and resurfacing across the community. The initiative targets major corridors as well as residential neighborhoods, including portions of Illinois Avenue, Oak Ridge Turnpike, Robertsville Road, East Division Road, and various neighborhood streets. Work is being carried out in phases, starting with targeted repairs to damaged sections—addressing underlying issues such as failing road base and problem spots—before applying new asphalt. This approach is intended to extend the pavement’s lifespan and reduce future maintenance needs.
In addition to the main project, a separate paving effort will focus on school zones, where crews will perform resurfacing, striping, and shoulder repairs to improve safety near local schools. Officials describe this year’s work as the first phase of a broader, multi-year plan. The current base repairs are expected to pave the way for a larger multi-million-dollar resurfacing project in 2027, which will include full asphalt overlays on many of the same streets. By fixing foundational problems first, city leaders believe the future paving will be more durable and cost-effective in the long run.
The paving activities are scheduled to continue over several months, potentially stretching through the fall depending on weather and scheduling. Detailed bid documents and project information are available on the City of Oak Ridge purchasing page at https://www.oakridgetn.gov/bids.aspx.
