OAK RIDGE POLICE LAUNCH RSVP PROGRAM TO SUPPORT SENIORS AND VULNERABLE RESIDENTS
The Oak Ridge Police Department has launched a new community initiative called the Resources for Senior and Vulnerable Persons (RSVP) Program, developed through its Volunteer in Police Services (VIPS) Program. Launched on April 28, 2026, the program pairs trained volunteers with local seniors and other vulnerable residents—particularly those who live alone or have limited family support—to provide regular contact, reassurance, and assistance. Volunteers, working alongside officers, conduct scheduled phone calls, home visits, and wellness checks while offering home safety guidance, crime prevention tips, referrals to community services, and emergency contact verification.
The program aims to promote safety, reduce social isolation, identify concerns early, and strengthen trust between law enforcement and the community. Captain Shannah Newman emphasized that the initiative reflects the department’s commitment to proactive community policing and extending support to vulnerable neighbors. Interested residents can refer someone or sign up to volunteer by contacting the VIPS Coordinator at (865) 425-3511 or visiting www.oakridgetn.gov/RSVP.
