PIGEON ROOST ROAD IN PUTNAM COUNTY CLOSED TEMPORARILY FOR WIDENING PROJECT

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) has announced a temporary closure of Pigeon Roost Creek Road in Chattanooga as part of the ongoing widening and improvement project on SR 136 (South Jefferson Avenue). The closure, which begins on Monday, March 9, 2026, and is expected to last approximately eight weeks (weather permitting), is necessary to construct a box culvert and finalize the roadway alignment where Pigeon Roost Creek Road connects to South Jefferson Avenue. These steps are critical for completing the project and ensuring long-term safety and proper drainage.

This closure was already planned in the original contract, and the road had been closed during earlier project phases. A signed detour route will be in place throughout the closure period. For westbound travelers on Pigeon Roost Creek Road, the detour involves turning onto West Cemetery Road, continuing to Bunker Hill Road, and then traveling south on Bunker Hill Road to reconnect with Pigeon Roost Creek Road. Eastbound travelers should head north on Bunker Hill Road, turn onto West Cemetery Road, and follow it to SR 136 (South Jefferson Avenue).

Motorists are urged to plan ahead, anticipate possible delays, and exercise caution in the work zone. Work progress depends on weather conditions. Drivers are encouraged to check real-time travel information via TDOT’s SmartWay Map or by dialing 511, and to comply with Tennessee’s Move Over Law, which requires moving over for highway workers and emergency vehicles—violations can result in fines up to $500 and up to 30 days in jail. As always, avoid distracted driving by refraining from texting, talking, or tweeting while behind the wheel.
