PROPOSAL CONSIDERED BY LAWMAKERS WOULD SPARE TENNESSEANS 4% TAX ON FOOD
A House subcommittee in the Tennessee General Assembly is considering a proposed bill that would give citizens a six month break from the state’s 4% grocery tax. The bill’s sponsor, State Representative Vincent Dixie, says the measure would save an average family of four around $100 a month. It would cost the state in the area of $20 million, but it would be paid for by drawing from the “rainy day” fund which is approaching $1.5 billion. The legislature must pass the state budget first before considering this bill.
