PROPOSED BILL IN TENNESSEE WOULD ALLOW “ELDERLY” INMATES TO SERVE SENTENCE AT HOME

A bill filed yesterday by Tennessee State Representative Karen Camper of Memphis would allow some older Tennessee inmates to be released early and spend the remainder of their sentence at home.

House Bill 2833 would require the Tennessee Department of Correction to create a five-year pilot program to release “elderly” inmates who have served at least 65% of their sentence to home detention.

The bill defines elderly inmates as 60 years or older.

If it is passed, inmates serving a sentence for a violent sexual offense or more than one conviction for first-degree murder or facilitation of first-degree murder would not be eligible for home detention. Inmates sentenced to life sentences without parole would also be ineligible.

The bill is still in the early phases of the legislative process.
