PROSECUTOR TO ASK GRAND JURY TO INVESTIGATE SURFSIDE COLLAPSE, VANDERBILT STUDENT FOUND IN RUBBLE

A state prosecutor announced she will ask a grand jury to investigate the building collapse in Surfside, Florida.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle said in a statement the grand jury probe into the Champlain Towers Condominium will “look at what steps we can take to safeguard our residents without jeopardizing any scientific, public safety, or potential criminal investigations.”

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a non-regulatory agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce, has sent a federal team of scientists and engineers to conduct a preliminary investigation to determine whether to launch a full probe of what caused the building to come down.

Search crews going through the ruins pulled six more bodies from the rubble yesterday, bringing the number of confirmed dead to 18. The number of residents unaccounted stands at 145 as of last night.

Authorities say a 21-year-old Vanderbilt University senior was among those killed when a high-rise condo building collapsed in Surfside, Florida. Andreas Giannitsopoulos visiting a family member when the structure came down. He was among the six found in the rubble yesterday.
