PUTNAM COUNTY SR 111 J-TURN SAFETY PROJECT REMAINS ON SCHEDULE AS TDOT PROGRESSES CONSTRUCTION

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) reports that the SR 111 J-Turn safety improvements project is holding steady to its construction schedule, with crews advancing foundational work and roadway widening.
Over the past two weeks, workers have concentrated heavily on subgrade preparation and base stone installation. On the southeast side, a thin layer of base stone was placed over the newly graded subgrade, while the northwest side saw workers cut the turn radius onto South Maple Avenue and lay base stone to build the widening to grade. Notably, the crossover at South Maple Avenue and Old Sparta Road is now closed, with local detours fully active.
Up north, crews have stripped topsoil at the SR 111 North Crossover to jumpstart grading for two proposed turn lanes and the inner turn radius.
Upcoming Impacts
  • Continuous grading and foundation efforts within the median zones
  • Ongoing base stone placement to bring roadway sections to grade
  • Construction activity focused on the proposed turn lanes and widening
  • Intermittent lane closures required for hauling material to raise the median
Motorists traveling through Putnam County should expect ongoing construction activity and exercise caution. TDOT urges drivers to avoid mobile device distractions, adhere strictly to Tennessee’s Move Over Law for highway workers, and check the TDOT SmartWay Map or dial 511 for real-time travel updates before heading out.
