PUTNAM SHERIFF WARNS OF IMPERSONATION SCAM TARGETING FAMILIES OF INMATES

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of another scam circulating.
This specific scam is targeting family members of individuals who are currently incarcerated. Scammers are calling family members claiming to work for the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office. Scammers are then telling you that if you pay them a certain amount of money over Apple Pay, Cash App, Bitcoin, or Venmo your family member will be released from jail. THIS IS A SCAM.
Some reminders to avoid scams:
* We will NEVER call you asking for money.
* We will NEVER call you to bond someone out of jail over the phone.
* A bondsman will NEVER contact you first, you must first contact them.
* NEVER give out any personal information or bank account information over the phone.
* If you receive a call from an unknown number asking for money, immediately hang up.
* Always call us at (931) 528-8484 if you have been contacted by someone asking for money.
Sheriff Farris wants to remind the citizens of Putnam County that, “Unfortunately, scammers will continue to prey on people in their vulnerable moments. Please know that we will never request payment of any kind over the phone. When in doubt, always call us before taking any action. We are here to help.”
