RENTABLE ELECTRIC SCOOTERS COMING TO CHATTANOOGA

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Rentable electric scooters are one step closer to coming to the Scenic City.At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Chattanooga City Council took up the issue. Representatives of the Lime Scooter company, which would provide the scooters, were also there.

The Chattanooga Department of Transportation updated its ordinance that addresses the scooters, and defined a 12-month pilot program that would get residents used to the idea. The program defines a specific district where they would be in operation during this trial period, called the “Urban Overlay District.” That includes downtown, North Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, and an area south of the Ridge to the Georgia state line.

Three hundred scooters will be available during the pilot program.

It would cost $1 to unlock a scooter, and $0.15 per minute after that.

Public housing residents would get a discount: $0.50 to unlock the scooters, and $0.07 a minute after that.

There will be a plan to educate users on proper use of the scooters, including parking.

The Chattanooga City Council would have the option of ending the contract at any time during the trial period, or after the trial period has ended.
