SECRETARY OF STATE TRE HARGETT TAKES PLEA DEAL IN DUI CASE

NASHVILLE, Tenn.–Tennessee Secretary of State Tre Hargett has entered a “best interest” plea for a DUI charge.

Hargett was arrested in June for DUI after leaving the Bonnaroo festival in Coffee County. Following his arrest, Secretary Hargett stated “On Friday night after leaving the Bonnaroo Music Festival, I was stopped by the Tullahoma Police Department and subsequently arrested for DUI. Driving Under the Influence is a serious matter, and I regret the circumstances that led to my arrest. I respect law enforcement and will trust the legal process as we move forward.”

On Thursday, Hargett issued the best interest plea which is described by District Attorney General Craig Northcott as a guilty plea acknowledging the facts are sufficient but not admitting guilt.

A Class A misdemeanor, Hargett received a sentence of 48 hours in jail, which was already served, and nearly a year of probation. There are also fines associated with the charge and the statute allows for his license to be suspended for a year.
