SQUIRREL CAUSES POWER OUTAGE IN ATHENS SUNDAY

Power has been restored after a squirrel caused an outage in Athens Sunday morning. According to a post on the Athens Utility Board Facebook page, customers in the area of of the North Athens Substation on Highway 305, heard a loud bang. They said that the power began to blink and then went out. The first technician to arrive on the scene discovered that a squirrel had sneaked into a pole-top insulator at a location on Old Niota Road, nearby the substation. The little-fellow met his fate burning and destroying the wire that ties the insulator to the phase-conductor wire. That wire fell across the cross arms on the top of the pole and fell to the ground. AUB crews had to make a new splice in the line before tying it back into service.
