T.B.I. INVESTIGATES OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN CHATTANOOGA

At the request of 11th Judicial District Attorney General Coty Wamp, TBI special agents continue to investigate a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday morning involving officers from the Chattanooga Police Department.
Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. in the 2100 block of Hamill Road as officers were responding to a call for a burglary in progress. When officers arrived on scene, they located Kevin Barnes (DOB 07/01/1981) attempting to flee the scene in a vehicle. For reasons still under investigation, a Chattanooga police officer discharged their firearm striking Barnes. Barnes was pronounced deceased at the scene.
At this time, this investigation remains active and ongoing. TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the district attorney general for her further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether an officer was justified in these matters. That decision rests with the district attorney general requesting TBI’s Involvement.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective departments to answer as they see fit.
