T.B.I. WARNS OF MEDETOMIDINE IN ILLEGAL DRUG CIRCULATION

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), in collaboration with the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services and the Tennessee Department of Health, has issued a public safety alert about the emergence of medetomidine, a highly potent veterinary anesthetic, in the state’s illicit drug supply.

This drug, which is significantly stronger than xylazine and causes prolonged sedation, has been detected in Tennessee crime labs and is often mixed with fentanyl, increasing its danger and contributing to overdose spikes in other states. The TBI strongly advises the public to avoid this hazardous and potentially deadly substance.

To combat the risk of overdose, health officials recommend that Tennesseans keep naloxone readily available, with free training and naloxone kits offered through the state’s Regional Overdose Prevention Specialists, accessible via TN.gov/behavioral-health/rops. Additionally, individuals seeking help for addiction can access free and confidential treatment referrals 24/7 through the Tennessee REDLINE at 1-800-889-9789.
