TBI INVESTIGATES FATAL OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN CHATTANOOGA
At the request of 11th Judicial District Attorney General Coty Wamp, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Chattanooga on Saturday night. Just after 9:30 p.m., Chattanooga Police Department officers responded to a disturbance call in the 2200 block of East 27th Street Court.
During the incident, a Chattanooga police officer discharged his weapon, striking Billy Joe Williams (born September 3, 1977). Williams was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No law enforcement officers were injured.
TBI agents are independently gathering evidence and conducting interviews to determine the sequence of events. The findings will be provided to the District Attorney General for her review and decision on whether the officer’s actions were justified.
The TBI serves only as fact-finders in such cases and does not identify the involved officers, referring those questions to the Chattanooga Police Department.
