TBI RELEASES NAME OF MAN ARMED WITH MACHETE SHOT BY JAMESTOWN POLICE OFFICER

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has released the identity of a man reportedly armed with a machete shot by a Jamestown police officer.

The incident happened just after 9 p.m. Wednesday when officers with the Jamestown Police Department responded to the 200 block of North Smith Street because of a reported domestic dispute.

When officers arrived, they found 47-year-old Raul Portugal, who was reportedly armed with a machete and refused to comply with their verbal commands.

The TBI said a Taser was used, but it was not effective.

At some point during the confrontation, an officer fired his service weapon, striking Portugal.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No officers were injured.

The TBI said it is investigating the reason why the officer fired his service weapon and to determine the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
