“TEACHER OF THE YEAR” NOW CHARGED WITH AUTO BURGLARY, TRESPASSING, AND DRUG POSSESION

A Tennessee woman who was named “Teacher of the Year” in January is now facing burglary, trespassing, and drug possession charges.

Police say Daelyn Waldroup hopped a fence to get to a car detained at a vehicle impound lot and broke into it. An affidavit WTVC obtained says this happened the morning of June 6. Athens officers were called to J Pro Car & Towing in Athens, according to the report. There, the officer found Waldroup sitting in a vehicle that was locked behind a fenced-in area. She told the officer she was “getting paperwork to get the car registered so that she could pick it up,” the affidavit says. Waldroup also told the officer an employee told her she could get her paperwork, but the employee told the officer that wasn’t the case, and that she advised her not to go behind the fence. The officer had Waldroup climb around the fence so she could go to the vehicle she used to get to the towing lot to retrieve her identification information. When she opened the door, the officer claims he detected a strong smell of marijuana. Waldroup denied having any pot in the car. The officer asked to search her car, and she gave consent. With another officer now present, the officer found “a small amount of marijuana, two pipes with marijuana residue, two grinders with marijuana residue, scraper and a large container that contained most of these items,” according to the affidavit. Waldroup was then arrested and charged with auto burglary violation, criminal trespassing, marijuana possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The affidavit says the vehicle Waldroup was found in is registered to a Cleveland man, who authorities are working to contact. In January of this year, Athens City Schools named Waldroup, who works at North City Elementary, as its pre-K-4th grade “Teacher of the Year.”
