TENNESSEE CROP AND CATTLE REPORT – APRIL 28, 2020

RAIN SOAKED AREAS RECEIVE ADDITIONAL MOISTURE ACROSS THE STATE, CONSIDERABLY SLOWING FIELD ACTIVITIES

In West Tennessee, wet weather afforded producers a very small window of opportunity to plant corn, cotton, and soybeans or apply herbicide burndowns, among other planned field activities. Agricultural producers anticipate applications of wheat fungicides as the crop continues development into the heading stage. Middle Tennessee producer’s field activities were minimal due to already wet conditions, compounded by additional rainfall and cold weather. Some upland corn was planted and ryegrass haylage harvested. Pastures and hayfields were fertilized and sprayed when and wherever possible.

Pastures improved and cattle were in good condition. Rains and cold weather continued in East Tennessee as well, slowing field activities and crop development. Greenhouse tomatoes were growing well and starting to ripen. Less than 5 percent of the tomato crop is being affected by leaf mold and timber rot disease challenges. There were 3.5 days suitable for field work. Surplus soil moisture conditions continue to rise. Subsoil moisture was rated 56 percent adequate and 44 percent surplus. Topsoil moisture was, identically rated 56 percent adequate and 44 percent surplus.
