TENNESSEE CROP AND CATTLE REPORT – MAY 5, 2020

In West Tennessee, warmer weather allowed producers an opportunity to work on planting. Specifically, corn was able to progress with hopes of soybeans and cotton coming soon. Fungicides were applied in some areas while other areas assessed damage from a few frost events. Some Middle Tennessee producers still feel the strain of already wet conditions while others were able to make great progress. Hay harvest began in some areas and showed promise. Other conditions such as cattle, corn and peaches are also looking favorable. Rains and cooler weather with winds continued in East Tennessee; limiting activities. Some areas of dry conditions allowed for planting. Greenhouse tomatoes were growing well and starting to ripen with little disease. Strawberries are slow to ripen with the need for warmer and sunnier days. There were 4.3 days suitable for field work. Surplus soil moisture conditions decreased. Subsoil moisture was rated 63 percent adequate and 37 percent surplus. Topsoil moisture was, identically rated 67 percent adequate and 33 percent surplus. Hay and roughage supplies were rated at 7 percent very short, 27 percent short, 58 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus.
