TENNESSEE LAUNCHES $3 MILLION GRANT INITIATIVE TO TACKLE YOUTH GAMBLING AND AWARENESS

The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services has announced $3 million in competitive grant funding aimed at strengthening prevention, education, and early intervention for youth gambling across the state. This funding initiative directly stems from recommendations by the Youth Gambling Prevention and Awareness Work Group, which brought together leaders from behavioral health, education, healthcare, and regulation to address growing concerns regarding young people and online financial risk-taking.
Recent data highlights an urgent need for action, with a 2024–25 survey revealing that 15 percent of participating Tennessee students reported gambling within a 30-day period, and the average age of initiation beginning around 12 years old. To combat these trends, the $3 million allocation—split evenly between recurring and non-recurring dollars—will support public agencies, nonprofits, educational institutions, and community organizations in building robust prevention networks, workforce training, and school-based education. State officials emphasize that a coordinated multi-sector approach is essential to shield minors from predatory gambling platforms, online ads, and mobile gaming features, while free treatment remains available statewide through partnerships like The Gambling Clinic.
