NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — According to a Davidson County affidavit, Tennessee State Representative Torrey Harris (D-90) was arrested Sunday in Nashville on charges of assault, domestic bodily injury and theft of property.

The affidavit says that Metro Nashville Police (MNPD) were dispatched when a man said he was assaulted by his ex-boyfriend, identified as Harris. The alleged victim, Terence Nealy, told police that Harris came to the Nashville apartment to return a dog that he had been watching for several days. It was there that Harris came in and began to talk to Nealy about their relationship. Terence attempted to leave the apartment and headed towards the door. When he did so, Harris allegedly put his arms up to prevent him from leaving. This eventually led to Harris ‘bear-hugging’ during which Nealy sustained a scratch to his arm.

The alleged victim said he made it clear that he wanted to leave and was eventually able to exit the apartment. Nealy told police that he noticed several items missing from the residence when he returned including: a Macbook Air, Playstation 5, a bar stool, lamps, white Air Max shoes, air pods, an apple TV and a television mount.

Officers report that they were able to contact Harris by phone who confirmed that he had possession of Nealy’s dog as well as other items that were claimed missing. Harris represents that he purchased these items as gifts for the alleged victim.

In a released statement Rep. Harris maintains his innocence, “I have retained legal counsel and myself and the team are working diligently to cooperate with the investigation. I maintain my innocence and will plead not guilty to the charges. I know that at the end of this I will be cleared of all allegations.”

Harris goes on to say, ” My focus will remain on serving the people as it always has been, but my ask is that if someone you know – loved one, friend, or neighbor is battling with mental health, that you help them as best as you can. Never deter from supporting those who need us even at their toughest moments.”
