TRAFFIC STOP UNCOVERS METH AND FENTANYL

On Sunday County K-9 unit Deputy Richardson initiated a traffic stop alongside officer-in-training Deputy Shaver. A traffic stop was conducted on a 1994 red Toyota truck for an inoperable tag light. Deputy Shaver made contact with the driver identified as Michael Roberts and while requesting his license Deputy Richardson noticed the driver taking an oddly long time to retrieve the documents.

The deputies asked Roberts to exit his vehicle and Deputy Shaver conducted a license check through dispatch. The deputies found that Roberts was on probation out of Knox County, but he declined to say why.

After getting consent to search the vehicle, the two deputies asked Roberts to empty his pockets into his toboggan, however, they noticed Roberts throw something from his left hand onto the ground while doing so.

Roberts emptied his pockets and Deputy Richardson observed an eye contact lens case, and when asked what was inside of it, Roberts is described in the report as looking down and avoiding eye contact and being unresponsive. Richardson noticed Roberts becoming nervous and seeming like he was about to run, so he was quickly secured and placed into handcuffs.

During the search, .83 g of methamphetamine, and 2.43 g of fentanyl were found.

Roberts was transported to the Cumberland County jail and charged with tampering with evidence, manufacturing-delivering-selling-possessing meth, and simple possession.
