Authorities are actively searching for a kayaker on Tellico Lake after his watercraft was discovered adrift downriver from the Chilhowee Dam.

According to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, the man went kayaking on the night of August 11. A boater subsequently found his kayak containing personal belongings at approximately 1 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators later located the man’s vehicle parked at a nearby boat ramp.

A multi-agency search effort involving TWRA game wardens, the Blount County Sheriff’s Department, and Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers deployed sonar equipment and an aviation unit to comb the area. Search teams also conducted on-foot sweeps of nearby islands, though the man has not yet been located.

Search operations continue in a remote section of the area that lacks both radio and cell phone service.
