TWRA WARNS OF COYOTE MATING SEASON
From the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency:
Coyote Mating Season: A Critical Time for Pet Owners
We want to alert pet owners to an important seasonal behavior of coyotes: mating season. Typically occurring from January through March, this period can lead to increased coyote activity, boldness, and aggression, as they establish territories and seek mates. This natural behavior poses potential risks to domestic pets, particularly small dogs and cats, as coyotes may see them as competitors or prey. Why Should Pet Owners Be Cautious?During mating season, coyotes are more likely to wander into residential areas in search of food and mates. Their territorial instincts are heightened, which can lead to conflicts with pets in backyards, on walks, or even near homes. Unattended pets, especially at dawn, dusk, and nighttime, are at the greatest risk.Safety Tips for Pet Owners:Supervise Pets Outdoors: Always accompany pets outside, especially in the evening and early morning hours. Keep them on a leash or within a secure, fenced area.Secure Trash and Food Sources: Remove attractants like pet food, birdseed, or open garbage cans that could draw coyotes closer to your home.Install Motion-Activated Lights: Bright lights can help deter coyotes from entering your yard.Keep Cats Indoors: Cats are particularly vulnerable. Keeping them inside is the best way to ensure their safety.Be Prepared During Walks: Carry a whistle, air horn, or pepper spray to deter an approaching coyote. Walk your dog on a short leash for better control.Educate Your Neighbors: Coyotes are territorial, so their behavior can affect the entire neighborhood. Work together to minimize attractants and reinforce boundaries.Remember: Coexistence is KeyCoyotes play an essential role in ecosystems by controlling populations of rodents and other small animals. However, being mindful of their natural behaviors during mating season can help reduce conflicts and keep pets safe.
By following these precautions, pet owners can help protect their furry companions while respecting wildlife. Stay alert, and take action now to ensure a harmonious coexistence during this active time for coyotes.
