UPDATE – A Bledsoe County, Tennessee woman who authorities say had more than 200 animals inside her home has been charged with animal cruelty.

Caroline Adkins in Pikeville was arrested after more than 160 dogs and more than 50 cats were reportedly on the property. She was taken to the Bledsoe County jail.

Bledsoe County detectives say they had to wear masks because of the extreme smell – and that the scene inside the house was horrifying.

“The house is decaying from the urine and feces inside the home,” said Detective George Hodge.

The rescue of the animals took a while because veterinarians, once inside the home, had to take photos and administer shots to each animal before they got transported.

Bledsoe County deputies say all the animals have been rescued from Atkins’ home as of yesterday.

Animal rescue groups in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and Oklahoma are taking in some of the dogs and cats.
