WARREN COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY RESIGNS, EFFECTIVE OCT. 31

Months ago, in a shocking incident in Smithville, Warren County District Attorney Chris Stanford, a sitting DA, was involved in a dangerous police action in November, captured on camera, where he fired shots during a foot chase with a murder suspect. The unusual and reckless involvement of a DA in police work led to Stanford being charged with felony reckless endangerment after one of his bullets narrowly missed a three-year-old girl in an apartment.
Despite the charge, Stanford continued his role as DA while awaiting trial, but recently announced his resignation, effective October 31, in a letter to the Governor, following a request from special prosecutor Bryant Dunaway, though no plea deal has been confirmed.
The incident, which legal analysts described as highly irregular, could have had tragic consequences, and the Governor will appoint a replacement for Stanford once he steps down, with a trial set for next year unless a resolution is reached sooner.
