WEAKENED TENNESSEE “BATHROOM BILL” HEADS TO GOVERNOR’S DESK

A watered-down bill that specifies Tennessee’s public indecency law applies to single-sex, multiple-occupancy bathrooms and changing rooms is heading to Governor Bill Lee’s desk for his signature.

The Senate voted 21-5 Tuesday to pass the bill; the measure passed in the House earlier in April.

Sections said to “target” transgendered people were removed; but concerns arose that the bill might still be used to arrest them.

Nashville Senator Steve Dickerson – who cast the lone Republican nay – said the bill is a solution seeking a problem.

The bill’s sponsor, Senator Mark Pody, said the bill simply aims to clarify existing law.
