As the cold weather is approaching fast here are some do’s and don’t’s on space heaters.
Using Space Heaters Safely
Space heaters can be a great way to stay warm during cold weather, but it’s important to use them safely to prevent fires and injuries. Here are some tips:
Do’s:
* Place the heater on a stable surface: Avoid placing it on carpets or rugs, as these can catch fire.
* Keep the heater away from flammable materials: This includes curtains, furniture, and bedding.
* Plug the heater directly into a wall outlet: Don’t use extension cords or power strips, as these can overload and cause fires.
* Check the heater regularly for damage: If you notice any damage, such as a frayed cord or a cracked case, stop using it immediately.
* Unplug the heater when you leave the room or go to sleep: This will help prevent fires.
* Consider using a smoke detector: A smoke detector can alert you to a fire, even if you’re asleep.
Don’ts:
* Leave the heater unattended: Always turn off the heater when you leave the room.
* Use the heater as a drying rack: Don’t hang clothes or other items on the heater to dry.
* Overload the circuit: If you plug too many appliances into the same circuit, it can overload and cause a fire.
* Use a space heater in a bathroom or other small, enclosed space: The heat can build up and cause a fire.
* Allow children or pets near the heater: Children and pets can be curious and accidentally touch the heater, causing burns.
By following these tips, you can use space heaters safely and comfortably.
