13 CONFIRMED DEAD IN GATLINBURG FIRES

Things are beginning to calm down in East Tennessee after a week of disastrous consequences involving fatal wildfires which destroyed Gatlinburg and the surrounding region. According to officials, all fires in the city and in Sevier County are out except for pin-pointing hot spots. Travel to Gatlinburg remains limited but Sevier County businesses, including Dollywood, are open. At the latest count, 13 deaths have been attributed to the fires including a Memphis husband and wife who were presumed missing earlier. Nearly 100 people have been treated for injuries. Fire Officials report that over 17,000 acres were burned, with 11,000 acres in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park being consumed and around 1000 structures have burned. The FBI says that they have had 100 calls on their Missing Person’s Hotline and are running down several leads. Information being released is that Zone 1 has been 80 percent searched, Zone 2 is 90 percent searched and Zones 3 and 4 are still under investigation with crews going from house to house checking on residents.
