2.5 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE REPORTED OUTSIDE OF DECATUR, TENNESSEE

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) says a 2.5 magnitude earthquake occurred yesterday morning nearly 4 miles outside of Decatur, Tennessee. No significant damage was reported. The earthquake yesterday happened near the same place as a 4.4 magnitude quake in December of 2018.

Small earthquakes of this magnitude are common in East Tennessee. These quakes are typically associated with the Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone. Officials say hundreds of earthquakes a year happen in this zone and most of them are so small they can’t be felt.

The largest earthquake to take place in the zone was a 4.7 magnitude back in 1973.
