Six Knox County children were hospitalized in the past 9 weeks due to infection from the La Crosse virus, a disease transmitted largely from mosquito bites.

Knox County Health Department said it was the highest number of cases reported since 2020, all current cases involve children under 12.

With mosquito season still ongoing, the KCHD is advising people to try and prevent infection by using insect repellents, wearing long sleeve shirts and pants if working in grassy areas, cover baby strollers, and reduce standing water on your property.

La Crosse virus infection doesn’t cause symptoms in most. However, those developing symptoms may experience fevers, headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Severe, albeit rare, symptoms include encephalitis, which is an inflammation of the brain.

They also said to see emergency care if parents notice new neurological issues in their child.
