A 7-year-old boy in Rhea County passed away from a gunshot wound.

The sheriff’s office says the incident happened inside a residence on Upper Fine Lane in Dayton.

Authorities say after the boy was shot, family members took him to Rhea County Medical Center, where he was stabilized.

An ambulance then transported him to Children’s Hospital in Chattanooga, where he passed away.

The Rhea County Sheriff’s Office is waiting to interview family members before releasing more details.
