85-YEAR-OLD FAIRFIELD MAN AVOIDS $15,000 SCAM

On September 12th, an 85-year-old man stopped by the Fairfield Glade Police Department and spoke with Deputy Fatima Pena, saying he contacted who he believed was Geek Squad regarding issues with his computer.

He said his computer started ‘acting weird’ and contacted the number he found on Best Buy’s website for Geek Squad. The conversation started normally enough and they advised him he had a bad virus on his computer keeping his computer from functioning correctly.

He gave the Geek Squad authorization for his computer, and they began clicking on things on his monitor, saying they would be going to his Bank accounts and Credit card accounts to lock and secure them. He didn’t think anything was wrong with this and allowed them to
proceed, but the ‘Geek Squad’ told him one of his accounts had been compromised for 15,000.00 dollars and he needed to take the money out of his account.

They told him to take the money and put it in a Bitcoin machine where it would be placed in a wallet for it to be safe. He stated when he heard this information, he realized this was a scam and ended the call.

Deputy Pena asked the man if he gave them any personal information, to which he stated he did not give them his social security number or his driver’s license number. However, stated he did however allow them to have access to his bank accounts.

Pena advised him to go to the bank inform the bank of the incident get a new account contact the credit card companies and advise them of this information as well.

Deputy Pena advised him scammers can spoof numbers, which is most likely what occurred, and explained the importance of trying to do things in person when getting computers cleaned to avoid scammers.
