88-YEAR-OLD SENDS $1,200 IN GIFTCARDS TO SCAMMER SHE THOUGHT WAS A RELATIVE

Cumberland County, TN- A woman came to the Sheriff’s Office Friday to report that she had been scammed out of $1,200.

She told the investigator that she had been contacted on Facebook Messenger by someone who she thought was her sister-in-law that lives in another state. The 88-year-old victim stated she was confused by all the messages she received, but they told her to send her money via Apple gift cards, and in return, she would receive $100,000.

The woman sent the scammer two $500 gift cards and another $200 gift card the following week. She then realized she was being scammed and contacted Apple, but the money was already gone.

The victim believes the scammer used a fake Facebook account with her sister-in-law’s name and photo.
