GOVERNOR, LAWMAKERS SUPPORT FETAL-HEARTBEAT LEGISLATION

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and other GOP lawmakers say they support efforts to ban abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected. That can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy. Tennessee is one of several states considering so-called “fetal-heartbeat bills.” Lee said Wednesday he will examine bills individually and, quoting, “the courts will have to decide for themselves whether it’s constitutional or not,” adding, “I would support any bill that reduces the number of abortions in the state.”

House Speaker Glen Casada and Senate Speaker Randy McNally both said they support the restriction.

In 2017, Tennessee banned abortions after 20 weeks on fetuses who are determined “viable.”

McNally predicts Tennessee will be a “leader in protecting the life of the unborn.”
