Late Friday night, a Rockwood man was killed when his Hyundai was struck by a Norfolk Southern freight train on Spring City Highway in Roane County.

Tennessee Highway Patrol reports 28-year-old Jesse E. Shipwash’s car was parked on the Norfolk Railroad crossing at Mountain View Road with no lights on.

The train approached from the north, using all proper warning signals, including lights and horn. The train hit the car on the passenger’s side, pushing it 225 feet down the track, where the car exited the tracks to the right side.

Shipwash, who was wearing a seatbelt, died in the crash. There was no evidence of drinking or drug use.
