UPDATE: BODY OF MISSING 83-YEAR-OLD WOMAN FOUND IN MEIGS COUNTY

Officials from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office have confirmed the elderly woman missing from her home for nearly a week has been found dead.

The body of 83-year-old Geneva Atkins was discovered around 8:15 last night in Meigs County. Atkins, who suffered from dementia and severe diabetes, was last seen about 9 p.m. last Tuesday, April 16, headed north on the 5800 block of Highway 58.

Preliminary findings indicate Atkins ran off the road, crossed a field, struck a wooded tree line and came to rest about 200 yards from the road.

A sheriff’s department spokesman says her truck went off the road near the 22000 block of Highway 58, just north of Decatur.

Multiple agencies had joined in the search, combing nearby parks and lakes; a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation plane had even been pressed into service Sunday.

Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating.
