LIVESAFE APP HELPS GUARD AGAINST END-OF-SEMESTER CRIME ON UT CAMPUS

Next Tuesday marks the last day of exams for the spring semester at U.T. This, according to campus police, is the also time of year when the university notes a spike in crime.

To combat the problem the U.T. Police Department has an app that allows users to report thefts, suspicious activity or any other crime on campus.

The LiveSafe app enables students to contact the dispatch center. Students can take (and upload) pictures, audio and video footage.

The app also has functionality to ensure students never walk alone. It lets users send a link to a friend, so the friend can use Google Maps to track the student’s location and movement. Users can even put in an estimated time of arrival, and if the user doesn’t arrive on time, it alerts the follower to check in to ensure the user is safe.

UTPD said the app also enables students communicating with police to provide their location silently – which could mean the difference between life and death in situations in which the person contacting authorities could be hiding from a perceived threat.
