MOTHER CHARGED IN DROWNING DEATH OF TODDLER IN BATHTUB; INFANT CRITICAL

Blount County authorities have charged a Seymour woman in the death of her toddler and the attempted drowning of her infant.

Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong said 34-year-old Bethanie A. Carriker of Seymour is being held on $1 million bond, charged with two counts of aggravated child abuse by neglect. Carriker is due in Blount County General Sessions Court this afternoon.

Officials said the Seymour Fire Department and Blount County Sheriff’s Office both responded to the home on Green Fern Trail about 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, after receiving a call about a drowning. When they arrived, they found Carriker had already removed both children from the tub.

Investigators reported the children were taken to Children’s Hospital in separate ambulances and were listed in critical condition. The 15-month-old girl was pronounced dead Tuesday evening. The 20-day-old child remains in critical condition.

Additional charges may be filed.
