GROUP SAYS — USE ALTERNATIVE TO GOV. HASLAM’S PROPOSED GAS TAX HIKE

The leader of Chattanooga’s Tea Party says there is a better way to repair the state’s roadways other than Gov. Haslam’s seven cent raise on the gasoline tax. Party leader Mark West says that people are enjoying the lowest prices on gasoline in years and that an increase in the gas tax is unsettling at this time. He says that “it defies logic why a politician would propose a new tax when he has a surplus of $2 billion.” The group American’s for Prosperity agree that road conditions are a priority in the state, but they also believe that it would be like any other tax that would start out as proposed but then end up funding something else. They propose to use part of the surplus money that would quickly be replenished since it is recurring revenue.
